“The terminology I use to talk about my diabetes has gotten me in some funny scenarios. Whenever my blood sugar is high, I simple say I'm high. Or I need a shot. So imagine a 10 year old little girl walking around with her older brothers saying, "uhh I'm high I need a shot." The looks I received...

I feel we should never have to apologize for having diabetes. It is not our fault, and we would gladly NOT have it, but yet, we always apologize for the inconveniences it creates. I say things like, "I'm so sorry my blood sugar is low. I just need to sit down for a minute." As humans, we apologize for taking care of ourselves and I am currently working on that for myself. Recently I have been trying to say things like, "I am sure if my diabetes was human it would be very sorry for this inconvenience." It's silly, yes, but I think it’s a change in perspective that needs to happen.

There are some days that your body will just be resistant to insulin and its continually running high. Drink some cinnamon tea or go on a walk! Literally just a 30 minute walk will get my blood sugar down from 300 to 160! I am sure its different for everyone, but with my experience these tools have been very helpful.”
